New Urban Adaptations -Benefits, Risks
The bicycle invaded the urban scene with a storm in the beginning of 20th century, only to fall into a mostly recreational use at the end of it. New species are being invented custom made or mass-produced. A Danish mother chooses a custom-made rickshaw for her daily transport, an affordable option. Her choice is helped by city infrastructure that lets her travel safely on an exclusive lane for bikes. However, while getting daily excercise, her and her kids may be at risk. Extended deep breathing in an environment of exhaust fumes and particulate matter has been shown to increase the odds of illness. The kids' heads are closer to the exhaust pipe, multiplying the normal dose of fumes adults get at higher level. Until cars become exhaust free (electric or fuel-cell) a seemingly healthy option may in fact be risky.
